Richard Mille RM 010 Boutique Special Swiss Watches

The new Richard Mille RM 010 Boutique Special automatic watch is issued in a super-limited edition of 10 pieces and is reserved exclusively for RM`s boutique located at the famous Place Vendome square in Paris. Featuring a combination of machine-brushed, matte DLC-treated case with their traditional approach to skeletonization, the new wristwatch looks quite impressive in its (sort of rugged) elegance, but comes at a very high price, which is, too, sort of usual for the Swiss-based watchmaking brand.

Overall Impression

A timepiece, which is limited to less than a dozen pieces must be a truly unique object of art in order to justify its (often prohibitively) high price tag. This new RM 010 Boutique Special will probably bear an even higher price tag that the €62,000 that its sibling, the RM 010 Black Night, comes with. Although differing from the aforementioned Black Night model only with color accents on its bezel flange and hands, all ten units will probably find their owners thanks to the gorgeous mechanism that powers them.

Mechanism

According to the Swiss watchmaker, the openworked timepiece is equipped with the RM 010 automatic movement, which is in fact a skeletonized version of their earlier RM 005 caliber.

The little engine is known for its unusual oscillating weight that not only features “most optimal winding” in the class, but also looks like it was drawn right from a Star Wars movie and was originally a part of some extremely nasty killing droid.

Although featuring a double-spring barrel design and beating at a pretty much standard frequency of 28,800 semi-oscillations per hour, this tiny beast only stores enough energy to power this gadget for approximately 55 hours: nice, but not terribly inspiring taking into account dozens of sporty timekeepers in this price range that can go for a whole week while being fully wound-up. If you don’t plan to wear this piece on a daily basis, a new winder is probably in order.

Case

The watch features Richard Mille‘s signature tonneau-shaped case, which is delivered in a matt black DLC coating.

The diamond-like hard treatment makes the watch more resistant to occasional scratches.

It must be noted that the case, which measures 48.00 mm in height, 39.30 mm in width, and is 13.84 mm thick is rather bulky and may look awkward on a smaller-sized wrist.

Also, the rubberized setting/winding crown may be a bit too short for some people: you should probably give this or a similar Richard Mille timekeeper a very thorough inspection before ordering one online (I have already seen a one gently used item in an absolutely mint condition online).

Dial

As you can see on the picture, the Richard Mille RM 010 Boutique Special features a skeletonized dial with white dial ring and 12 Arabic numerals engraved right on the front sapphire crystal.

Compared to the aforementioned RM 010 Black Night model, this one seems to be a lot more readable thanks to its hour and minute hands preserving their “natural” metallic color and offering nothing but some skeletonization and machine-brushing to please your eye. What’s even more pleasant to note is that the hands are very nicely matched in styling to the mechanism’s parts that are visible through the front crystal: something that you rarely see when it comes to skeleton watches that weren’t designed from scratch.

As usual, the date window looks a bit awkward at first, but you will possibly get used to it quite easily after just a couple of passing glances.
