Angular Momentum Classic Artisan BigBigDate

The Swiss watchmaker that specializes in what is usually called an “artisan timekeeper” has just released a new model from the Classic Artisan series: the new Angular Momentum Classic Artisan BigBigDate wristwatch that turns the concept of a calendar watch inside-out. Like, literally inside-out.

While most analog watches tend to display current date with a rotating disk, only a part of which is visible through a date aperture on the dial, the new Angular Momentum Classic Artisan BigBigDate approaches the problem from another angle putting the calendar wheel under the lime light and allowing it to visually dominate the whole display, basically serving as the main piece of decor.

As you can see on the pictures, the calendar wheel with its Baroque-style Arabic numerals is painted on the back side of a 32.400-carat sapphire crystal using Verre Eglomise technique.

The milky-white dial behind the sapphire glass is actually a jumping date-disk with a deliberately simple bright red indicator pointing at one of sixteen Breguet numerals representing only odd days of the month.

Although this approach to time representation may look somewhat confusing to those who got used to more “normal” calendar wheels, the design makes the watch even more unique and, well, even more desirable to a person knowing a thing or two about fine arts.

Perhaps, the only thing that detracts from the concept’s beauty is that the display of time (something that is usually considered a “primary” function of any watch) is hindered by the calendar with the tip of the minute hand covered by the enamel and the watch itself lacking even a rudimentary chapter ring. If you plan to actually wear one of these beauties, you may sometimes find this minor problem at least mildly irritating.

According to the Swiss company, the watch is powered by a hand-wound ultra-flat caliber (probably, yet another new old-stock mechanism that Angular Momentum seem to love so much,) which is placed inside a 1.4435Cnu “Staybrite” steel case.

Being only 39.00 mm in diameter, the mirror-polished body of the timekeeper looks extremely dressy and even the gargantuan 8.00 mm winding crown decorated with an onyx cabochon -another signature element of their current collection- doesn’t really spoil the picture (and it may actually look great if you prefer to wear your shirt with onyx-decorated cufflinks or wear an onyx ring.)

Angular Momentum plans to sell the watch “only in small numbers” (although there is no officially set limit to the total number of timepieces that they plan to produce) at an estimated price of €6000.

If you consider yourself a serious watch collector, go for it!
