The German watchmaking brand Limes, which is mostly known for its dressy timepieces, but also produces watches for different sports activities, has recently updated its Endurance line with the new Limes Endurance Neptun 2 automatic diving watch.
Rated for frightening depths of down to 1000 meters, the new model was nevertheless presented in a rather compact, even slim, satin-finished stainless steel case only 41.2 millimeters in diameter and 12.60 millimeters thick.
And that includes a massive unidirectional rotating bezel that also houses a thick sapphire crystal!
Now, that is a lesson on downsizing!
Well, I am positively sure that the reason why the German brand, which is owned by the local case-builder Ickler GmbH, decided to issue the watch in a mid-sized case was not due to shortages of surgical-grade stainless steel.
It is just that more and more European watchmakers begin to understand that it is time to stop making their watches bigger and start making them better.
By the way, Limes seems to have learned the lesson long ago, since the new watch actually outsources its case from an earlier Neptun 1 model, which is also rated for 1000 meters.
Powered by the reliable and bullet-proof Sellita SW 200 automatic movement, which is in fact a very well-made clone of the ETA 2824 ebauche, the new watch offers standard functionality of a usual three-hander.
It shows time, counts seconds and displays current date.
While not terribly original (if you have seen a diving tool watch, you have probably seen them all,) the legibility of its dial is above all praise.
The large hands are covered with generous amounts of Superluminova as are the huge hour markers, as well as the usual small dot on the bezel.
As usual for the brand, the Limes Endurance Neptun 2 is available in two versions of the dial (black or orange) and on two different straps.
The latter can be either a black rubberized leather strap with white contrast stitching or a standard stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp.
The version on the strap retails for $1290 and the one on the bracelet is priced at still affordable $1560. Not particularly expensive for a German watch powered by a Swiss movement.
