The brand new Blancpain 500 Fathoms Cannes 2009 Limited Edition (ref. 50015-12B34-52B) diving watch brings you a winning combination of an overwhelming presence of the huge 48 mm case, an impressive WR rating that could be envied even by some professional-grade diving companions, as well as a top grade in-house automatic movement with five days of guaranteed power reserve!
The new Blancpain 500 Fathoms Cannes 2009 Limited Edition diving timepiece was officially presented to public during the 32nd Cannes International Boat Show that ended a couple of days ago. As you can see on the photos below, the watch still irradiates that signature mojo of the original Fifty Fathoms series that it clearly pays homage to.
Although the new ref. 50015-12B34-52B is great from all perspectives, its main point of interest is, without doubt, hidden beneath its transparent case back covered with a thick sapphire crystal. In place of a standard oscillating weight, Blancpain employed a finely crafted propeller-shaped piece of metal with exquisite perlage pattern.
The rotor provides energy for the relatively fresh Caliber 1315 automatic movement, which is based on their top-notch 13RO hand-wound manufacture caliber (judging by a number of new movements introduced during recent years, Blancpain plans to the 13R0 as their primary base caliber that will be used throughout the model range wherever it is possible.)
Measuring only 4.57 mm in height and impressive 30.60 mm in diameter, this powerful and precise engine has a power reserve of 120 hours. Such an impressive energy supply comes courtesy of whole three series-coupled spring barrels that were modified to work with Glucydur balance.
Of course, such a prominent caliber requires a generous casing, so the Blancpain 500 Fathoms Cannes 2009 Limited Edition diving watch comes in an overwhelmingly large titanium case. Measuring 48 millimeters in diameter and almost 17 millimeters from AR-treated sapphire top to screw-in sapphire bottom, the wristwatch will probably not look very good with formal attire (especially if you are a financial analyst rather than a professional athlete,) but still makes a very strong impression since its massiveness is perfectly matched by its no-nonsense exterior styling. As for the titanium alloy that this device is fashioned from, it’s use seems to be totally justified: although prone to occasional bumps and scratches, this lightweight material also significantly reduces weight, making the watch more comfortable to wear.
Like all other models of the 50 Fathoms series, the 500 Fathoms is primarily a tool watch and therefore looks next to boring (especially compared to models from other watchmakers that design their diving watches with desk divers in mind,) but this is certainly a must have for any collector thanks to its exclusive in-house movement.
