The super-limited Edox Sea Dubai (ref. 94003 357N NIN) edition commemorates the success of the already famous Team Sea Dubai. One of the greatest surprises of the 2008 RC 44 Championship Tour elite sailing event just had to be immortalized with a product developed by one of their main sponsors.
Well, first things first. The word “Super” in the name is sort of deceptive since some persons assume that it means a “Super Limited Edition.” It’s not.
The Swiss-based brand plans to limit the total production to 244 individually numbered pieces. While being more “limited” than your average Breitling that often limits their “limited editions” to thousands of pieces, this is indeed a small batch. However, there are still too many watches scheduled to be produced to imagine that it’s going to be a super-collectible item in any way: you’d just not see it as often at online auctions as some “limited edition” Navitimer, that’s all.
Based on the Grand Ocean Automatic series, the new Sea Dubai comes sporting the same huge 48.00 mm x 17.00 mm case in black PVD and polished stainless steel and features the same general design of its face.
Compared to the recent marine-themed Grand Ocean automatic chronograph I and the rest of the series, the model is more legible, though.
Its black dial serves as a good background for the steel hour markers and its elegant hour and minute hands are now covered with enough luminescent substance to provide good reading even at the poorest lighting conditions.
Powered by the Edox 94 mechanical caliber, which is a Soprod 9090 movement based on the ETA 2892/A2 ebauche, the dial also features a big date window at 12 o’clock, as well as a compass-styled power reserve indicator at 6 o’clock.
As you can see, the latter has an unusual indicator scale telling how many hours exactly (well, not exactly, but very close to) left before the mechanism will stop.
The solid case back of the ref. 94003 357N NIN features the Grand Ocean’s trademark illuminator-like cutout that provides a good look at the movement’s balance spring. Well, that’s a nice move for a brand that wants to save a buck or two on skipping the decoration of the mass-produced movement.
Certainly, a must-have if you can afford to pay €4430 for a watch of this class.
Since the timekeeper is supposed to be worn on a boat and features an impressive water resistance rating of 244 meters (so you can use it while diving or snorkeling,) it is supplied on a black rubber strap that nicely complements the PVD-treated black parts of the generously sized body of the Sea Dubai.
