Offered in an oversized square-shaped case and powered by a slightly redecorated ETA 2894S2 skeletonized caliber, the new Edox Classe-Royale Limited Edition Jackpot (ref. 95001 357N NIN, but also available in PVD-plated rose gold as ref. 95001 357RN NIR) chronograph wristwatch looks surprisingly refined. The secret behind the successful design, perhaps, is in a subtle way that the brand’s designers have balanced the (originally) unimpressive layout of the open-worked ETA movement with a sporty square case using nothing more than three black rims for the chronograph sub-dials and a deliberately multi-part bezel. The result? Well, it’s a fairly nice chronograph that is as visually attractive as it is, regretfully, overpriced.
While skeletonized wristwatches are very rarely successful when it comes to relatively inexpensive timekeepers with their exterior either highly unbalanced or outright ridiculous, with the new Edox Classe-Royale Limited Edition Jackpot chronograph, the Classe-Royale family, which is considered to be one of the most popular in Edox’s model range, may be proud of its new -almost transparent- member.
Although I do not really understand the reason behind the name (it doesn’t look like a game machine to me and I am not sure whether I would like to win it in a lottery,) I really dig the way the mass-produced caliber was integrated into the whole picture, and I also appreciate the massive effort behind this product. Just to put things in perspective, take a minute and compare this gorgeous timepiece with the new limited edition Hamilton Jazzmaster, which is, too powered by the same mechanism. While the Hamilton looks pathetic with its unreadable dial and uninspiring design, this new offer from Edox truly stands out.
Well, to be fair, this one was presented half a year ago right after Baselworld 2009 trade show, but I guess you can still find one at the Swiss brand’s authorized dealers.
Featuring an easily-recognizable design of the boxy case, the Jackpot edition hides nothing of its inner workings allowing for an unobstructed view through its skeletonized dial and transparent case-back cover. Of course, compared to a lot more expensive, hand-built calibers (such as those custom jobs that are produced, for example, by the German brand Grieb & Benzinger), the ETA 2894S2-based automatic Edox chronograph caliber 95 doesn’t look as feather light and you will not see the blue sky through the gadget. It comes with a satin-finished surface and a branded oscillating weight without any extra decoration for the sake of better congruence with the hi-tech design of the case.
What really scares me a little is, well, the size of this thing. At whole 45 millimeters wide, it is just too big for a man of normal proportions and I can’t really imagine how one would wear it with business attire, while keeping a straight face.
Beating inside case is automatic Edox chronograph caliber 95. Based on the ETA 2894S2 caliber, this one comes with a satin-finished surface and a branded oscillating weight without any extra decoration for the sake of better congruence with the hi-tech design of the case.
Being a skeleton watch, this new ref. 95001 357N NIN doesn’t hold a world record for the best legibility. However, its hour and minute hands are covered with Superluminova, so, at least at night, reading time will not be an issue.
Regretfully, I can’t say the same about the small seconds hand, which is placed at 3 o’clock and the chronograph hour and minute hands: painted matte black, they seem to be almost completely unreadable regardless of lighting conditions.
