First presented at Baselworld 2008, the Turbine XL collection was reintroduced for this year with a gorgeous Perrelet Turbine XL (Ref. A3027/1). While the collection is currently available in an extra-large size of 50 millimeters in diameter and offering six different color and material combinations, it is the limited-edition model in rose gold and DLC-coated stainless steel that looks the best if you are into this sort of styling.
It took Perrelet almost two years to present a plus-size version of their mesmerizing Turbine Collection.
While the original Perrelet Turbine model was offered in a not particularly legible black-on-black color scheme, the Turbine XL Ref. A3027/1 is sporting a very contrast dial layout. Its laconic hour and minute hands are generously covered with white SuperLuminova luminous substance that looks extremely contrast on the matt-black background provided with the black dial and black Titanium winding rotor shaped as twelve turbine blades.
Black Arabic numerals engraved on rose gold plaques are also highly legible as are the bright-red central second hand and odd hour indexes that are also painted in white luminescent stuff.
Like the original Turbine, the XL is powered by the same Perrelet P-181 automatic movement that features their patented Double Rotor winding mechanism. The movement, as far as I know, is based on the ETA 2892A2 ebauche with the twin-rotor complication made in-house.
The uniqueness of this movement is that both oscillating weights share the same shaft, more evenly distributing their weight and making the winding process more efficient and, probably, even extending the caliber’s estimated life span.
As you can see in the photos, the Turbine XL now features an extra maintenance horn added between the lugs. The additional horn makes the watch look even sexier and also provides the natural rubber strap with better support.
Well, as is often the case with so-called “sporty” watches, the only real problem with this timekeeper is its size.
According to official specs, the new Turbine XL (as the name implies) is presented in an enormous body whole 50 millimeters in diameter and more than 14 millimeters in height! With its long lugs, the body will probably look good on a mighty wrist of a quarterback or a professional bodybuilder, but I can hardly imagine it on a wrist of a normal man (if he is not terribly overweight, that is.)
To justify the price tag of more than USD 20,000, Perrelet plans to limit the total run to only 77 pieces.
