Trying to make extra press for its exclusive boutique at the Taipei 101 building that still holds the title of the tallest not only in Taiwan but the whole Asia, the Italian brand offers a new Panerai Luminor 1950 10 Days GMT Taipei 101 Limited Edition (PAM 403) automatic watch. As you can see on the photo above, the limited edition Luminor 1950 even has the supertall’s image roughly engraved on its stainless steel case back cover! Well, on the front side it is still a good old Panerai, whether you like it or not.
Like the Panerai Luminor 1950 10 Days GMT Ceramica 44mm P2003 (PAM 335) that was presented in the beginning of the year at SIHH 2010 trade show, the Panerai Taipei 101 version is almost overloaded with functions, those including a second time zone, 24-hour indicator, small date aperture at 3 o’clock, and even a horizontal power reserve indicator.
However, its matte black dial somehow manages to display all of this data without actually looking too crowded with kudos probably going not only to the featureless black background, but also to expertly chosen size of the Arabic numerals and black-beige color scheme that, while offering good contrast for superb readability, still doesn’t hurt your eyes with its brightness.
The device is powered by the in-house Panerai P.2003 automatic caliber that beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz.)
Built of 296 parts and measuring 31 mm in diameter and 8 mm in height, the movement also sports a Glucydur balance wheel and KIF Parechoc anti-shock system. Its three spring barrels store enough potential energy to power the watch for a total of 10 days, or around 240 hours! While the power reserve is probably beyond the limits of practicality, it would still be a pleasure to have a watch with such an extensive power reserve: if not for convenience, then at least for bragging rights. I think that you would agree that there are not so many luxury timekeepers with GMT functionality that offer so many hours of uninterrupted operation.
Presented in a 44mm cushion-shaped case, the watch is not that big by modern standards, but its solid, deliberately massive lugs somehow make it look heavier than it is, but not heavy enough as to forbid its use with formal attire. It is water resistant to 100 meters, so wearing one with more casual dress is also not a problem although you would probably ruin its precious brown leather strap after taking the piece for a swim in salty water.
Officine Panerai currently offers the Luminor 1950 10 Days GMT Taipei 101 Limited Edition at a recommended price of $17,250 USD.
As one might have expected, only 101 individually numbered units will be made.
It is not clear, whether the watch will be available internationally or offered only to those visiting Panerai boutique at Taipei 101.
