It looks like with their new Roger Dubuis Velvet (ref. RDDBVE0008) automatic wristwatch that was designed exclusively for ladies, the Swiss-based watch manufacture starts a completely new collection of timekeepers meant to win hearts (and probably wallets) of the bigger and unarguably better part of humanity.
Compared to the last year’s Roger Dubuis Excalibur Lady automatic watch, the new timepiece sports a design that, while clearly more sophisticated, bears all the family traits that make the watch easily recognizable to the brand’s loyal auditory (mostly thanks to the set of elongated Roman numerals transferred on the three-dimensional dial.)
Although being the same 36 millimeters in diameter as the Excalibur Lady, the new watch looks a lot more massive. This, probably, goes courtesy of its solid rose gold bracelet that is integrated with the Velvet’s body and would probably look better on a timekeeper designed for men.
The pair of applied rose gold Roman numerals on the dial, as well as the fat bezel that is adorned with 66 diamonds totaling 1.33 carats, too, didn’t help the timepiece look any lighter.
Well, it is still looks brilliant and the 266 diamonds that adore the Velvet‘s massive bezel and the bracelet and together total 2.98 carats somehow compensate for the visual heaviness of the jewelry item.
According to the Swiss watchmaker, the watch is powered by an upgraded version of the same RD821 caliber that animated the aforementioned Excalibur Lady from the last year: an extremely efficient automatic caliber that, despite its compact size and relatively short mainspring reducing the caliber’s overall thickness (something that becomes quite important when you design a relatively small timekeeper designed for a fine woman’s wrist,) features a power reserve of 48 hours.
Yes, it may still not be enough to simply leave the watch in box for the weekend, but is still quite impressive taking into account that many of its competitors animated by more archaic mechanisms would often give you no more than 40 hours of continuous operation after being fully wound.
The new version of the movement not only lacks the small seconds indicator, but is also compliant with the new Geneva Seal requirements that guarantee the highest quality and reliability of the hand-built caliber.
The recommended price is yet to be revealed, but it is absolutely clear that the watch will be more expensive than the Excalibur Lady that retails for around $17,000.
