Sinn Tachymetric Chronograph Manufactum Edition

The German watchmaker Sinn has fairly recently presented its new Sinn Tachymetric Chronograph Manufactum Limited Edition automatic watch. As the name implies, the timekeeper, which is limited to just 100 numbered pieces, is going to be sold exclusively through the numerous stores of the German retail chain Manufactum GmbH & Co. KG that specializes in offering premium-grade products: from €112 hand-made badger hair shaving brushes to €3500 steel desks. Neatly placed among these pricey products, the €1350 gadget looks sort of affordable.

Although the chronograph’s dial looks somewhat weird, the wristwatch makes a very solid impression thanks to its high legibility and the highly reliable Swiss made movement that powers the gadget.

The movement in question is, quite surprisingly, the legendary ETA Valjoux 7750 ebauche: a mechanism of choice even for timepieces that are four times more expensive than this one. As you may have already gathered from the pictures, the movement is slightly modified and is stripped of its chronograph sub-dials as well as of the day of week indicator.

As a result, we have a very robust watch that, besides the usual hour and minute hands, sports nothing but a central chronograph hand with a very unusual tachymeter, as well as a small seconds indicator at 9 hours and a date window at 8 o’clock.

Since the Tachymetric Chronograph Manufactum is clearly inspired by pilot’s watches from the first half of the 20th century, it’s no surprise that three out of four hands are coated with beige-toned Supeluminova, a luminous substance that also covers the stick-shaped hour markers, as well as the triangle on the bezel.

Alas, the whole setup is protected from moist and dust with an easy to scratch acrylic crystal. Whether the material was employed for the sake of cost-cutting or to make the vintage-styled timekeeper look more authentic, I am not sure.

A really nice thing about this timekeeper is, of course, the size of its stainless steel dial.

Measuring pretty much standard (for a watch equipped with the Valjoux 7750 and a domed crystal) 15 millimeters in height, the watch is only 41 millimeters in diameter, which will certainly make it feel comfortable even with a business suit if you will take time to replace the stock Breitling-style brown leather strap with something less pretentious.

For a price of €1350, this is truly a must have for a real enthusiast especially if you take into account the choice of movement: an ETA 7750-based caliber is quite a rare bird in this price range.
