The 2011 Frederique Constant Amour Heart Beat with its signature heart-shaped dial cutout has been reissued for this year as a limited edition series. Now called Frederique Constant Amour Pavee Heart Beat (refs. FC-310SQPV2PD6 and FC-310SQPV2PD4), the collection features more than a hundred of diamonds adorning its bezel and the mother-of-pearl dial.
Just like the previous iteration, this watch was, I quote, “designed by actress ShuQi, the firm’s ambassador to China”. Born in Taiwan and mostly known here for her acting in 2002 Transporter, miss ShuQi is a lady of many talents.
Her new creation (although I didn’t understand whether she limited her effort to a basic sketch or actually worked with a team of professional designers) is offered in the same medium size of 34 millimeters as other members of the collection. This particular pair of accessories is now delivered not only in mirror-polished stainless steel but also in a lot dressier rose gold-plated steel, both lavishly decorated with precious stones.
While the former looks somewhat cold and detached, the latter leaves a warm impression, although I am not sure whether the gadget will be as long-lasting as the (hopefully) cheaper version in steel. At least, I don’t think that you will be able to just go to your local jeweler and polish that nasty scar you accidentally put on the side of the case.
While the number of diamonds of the bezel remains the same 48, the dial is paved with dozens of extra precious stones that pave the center of the face. Besides looking chic, they also provide some extra contrast to the classic-shaped hour and minute hands.
As for the heart-shaped aperture that gives a glimpse at a part of the movement, I am still not sure about it. To my taste, it would be nice to partly obscure the view with a tinted sapphire or, perhaps, some kind of red-colored precious stone: the inner workings of this undecorated movement are not particularly pleasant to look at.
By the way, the movement in question is the same Caliber FC-310. Although Frederique Constant refuses to say anything about the caliber that the movement is based on, I’ve heard a number of reports that the movement is based on the good old ETA 2824-2 blank caliber: a reliable and robust ebauche, which is widely used by many European watchmakers.
Predictably, the timekeeper’s total production will be limited to precisely 888 pieces: an extremely lucky number for any Chinese.
