The new Speake-Marin The Piccadilly Classic HMS (Hours, Minutes and Seconds) dress watch is offered in a slightly updated “Picadilly” body, which is now available in stainless steel and rose gold, as well as in modest 38 mm and more prominent 42 mm sizes.
Although the Swiss brand Speake-Marin has been here for only around 12 years, the brand’s founding father, Peter Speake-Marin has more than 25 years of watchmaking experience. Before starting his own business, he, for example, worked at Renaud et Papi: the Audemars Piguet watch group subsidiary that designs complications for the famous watchmaking brand.
Thanks to his vast experience in designing and making movements, Speake-Marin the brand is among the very few independent watchmakers that equips its timekeepers with de facto (not just de jure) in-house calibers.
This new Speake-Marin The Piccadilly Classic HMS features the traditionally elegant, classic-inspired dial with figured, blued-steel hands that look very contrast regardless the finish of the dial: whether it is silver-toned or white-lacquered, the slightly oversized hands and the bold Roman numerals look very easy to read, even if you don’t happen to be a Hawkeye.
The watch comes equipped with the in-house PSM Eros 2 automatic caliber. Designed by Mr. Speake-Marin himself, the movement measures only 30.40 mm in diameter and is just 4.35 millimeters thick, but there is still enough place for a twin-barrel energy storage system that provides the watch with no less than five days (120 hours) of power supply.
As you can see on the picture, the mechanism is equipped with the signature Mistery rotor. Skeletonized and blued, the oscillating weight is shaped like the topping tool: an ancient device that was used from the 19th to 20th century by European watchmakers to shape teeth of gear wheels.
Surprisingly enough the Piccadilly Classic HMS starts at pretty impressive CHF 11,200 for the version in stainless steel case. Yes, the Swiss-based brand expects you to pay a hefty premium for an in-house caliber with unusually massive power reserve, but I still have an impression that the wristwatch is also massively overpriced.
I mean, the brand is still sort of obscure and it would be hard to impress anybody with this fancy gadget without explaining how great the caliber is and how unique is the ‘iconic’ Speake-Marin ‘Mystery’ rotor among many hundreds of other similarly priced timekeepers.
