I first planned to write this article back in December 2012 but soon found out that a refreshed model was in the works and decided to postpone this small review for a later date. Last week, the German watchmaking brand has made me aware about the 2013 Archimede Pilot 42 R Red model together with its two siblings: versions in blue (Pilot 42 B) and white (Pilot 42 W). I still hope to get my hands on one of them at some point in time, but so far I can only use their official images. So, here we go.
The Italian fashion giant Gianni Versace S.p.A. has finally decided to expand their Vanitas collection (the one that was previously known to me only for its fairly expensive fragrances but also happens to include handbags and other accessories) with a fashion watch. Designed for women and powered by an inexpensive Swiss quartz movement, which is identical to the mechanism that also happens to animate their 2010 Versace Reve Carre model, the new Versace Vanitas Quartz Collection (ref. VK773 0017) sports an attractive design.
The mildly refreshed Linde Werdelin Oktopus II Titanium Double Date collection now comes in a flashy new color of lipstick red. The color is not limited to just the dial and the thick rubber strap, but also decorates the gaskets between eight steel screws and the black ceramic bezel of the piece. And if you get tired of so much red on your wrist, the rubber band can be easily swapped for a more discrete black textile strap that comes free of charge.
After a somewhat controversial Saratoga Alarm Chronograph (0320219) that was released about two months ago during the last Baselworld 2013 show, Concord has issued yet another quartz-powered timekeeper. The new Concord Saratoga Lady White (ref. SKU 0320214), too, pays homage to the legendary Saratoga Race Course, a thoroughbred horse racing track which is located in Saratoga Springs, New York, United States.
Expanding the bizarre collection of "fashion divers", the 2013 Ulysse Nardin Maxi Marine Diver (Ref. 266-33-8C/922) offers a nice combo of 18-karat rose gold with elements of its chunky body and solid bracelet crafted from black rubber and glossy black ceramic respectively. While not a "tool," the timekeeper is nevertheless equipped with a COSC-certified chronometer movement and features a water resistance rating that makes it suitable at least for recreational diving.
IWC has prepared a limited edition version of its Big Pilot model. Sporting the same dial layout as the 2010 IWC Blue Big Pilot Limited Edition 7 Days Power Reserve, the 2013 IWC Big Pilot's Watch TOP GUN Boutique Edition Green (Ref. IW501903) grew even bigger and finally got its stainless steel body swapped in favor of a more appealing black ceramic.
'Worldtimers' are extremely popular these days. They are produced as ultra-limited one-offs, as well as dirt-cheap throwaways from numerous Chinese "fashion" brands with a lifespan of a fruit fly. Baume & Mercier has recently introduced its own take on the idea. Powered by a (technically) in-house automatic caliber, the new Baume & Mercier Capeland Worldtimer (ref. MOA10107 aka 10107) is available both in stainless steel and in a lot more expensive rose gold body.
If you liked the functionality of the last year's Transocean Chronograph Unitime World Time Automatic, but didn't quite care for its bombastic styling that just screamed conspicuous consumption, the Swiss watchmaker gives you yet another chance to fall in love with this beautiful watch. While sporting the same hardware inside its generously proportioned body, this new Breitling Transocean Unitime Pilot limited edition chronograph now comes in a no-nonsense black-and-grey color scheme that makes it an almost perfect "tool" for a pilot.
Mostly known for its prolific AquaScope family of cushion-shaped divers that offer a nice alternative to impressive, but heavily overpriced Panerai timekeepers, the Swiss-based manufacturer has recently added a nice "aviator" to its model range. Presented back in May during Baselworld 2013 show in titanium (ref. 60650-21G211-FK2A) and black DLC titanium (ref. 60650-21H612-21A), the JeanRichard AeroScope Automatic combines the same rugged, cushion-shaped body with a finely crafted dial of a tri-compax chronograph.
The dressy Dubey & Schaldenbrand Grand Dome R92 Vintage is powered by a NOS Valjoux 92 hand-wound caliber and will soon be offered as a super limited edition of just 16 pieces with only one or two pieces available to US-based customers.
