Revealed in April 2014, the limited edition Chopard Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 (Ref. 168535-3002) celebrates the brand’s partnership with one of the most revered icons of the European car industry. More than three decades ago, the timeless design of the Porsche 928 has become a source of inspiration for the team that worked on Apple Macintosh. Now, their revolutionary 919 Hybrid sports prototype offers some design ideas for the Swiss watchmaker.
The Hamilton Khaki X-Wind Chronograph family (the one, which is listed on their website as a member of a larger Khaki Aviation family of military-themed watches) was recently updated with a limited edition collection (including a version with black dial, pictured, ref. H77766331.) Being ahem limited to ahem just 1999 pieces, it will never become a true rarity (well, maybe in fifty years or so), but I must admit that this little guy still looks nice. Featuring all the usual stuff, like a true chronograph movement and their famous drift angle calculator, the new watch differs from the rest of the pack with its new color combinations and a slightly reworked dial.
Like almost all their recent models belonging to the Sporting collection, the Ralph Lauren Sporting Classic Chronometer features all the familiar design elements that some people would call “easily recognizable”, while other would probably refer to as “tiresome”. Well, at least the American fashion house has found a design language of its own and is ready to stick to it at all costs.
The energetic JD Grande Seconde SW line has been here for about five or six years now. It was introduced back in 2008 in different variations, including the outrageous SWROUGE model that featured a combination of rose gold and black rubber. This new Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde SW Cotes de Geneve (Ref. J029030245), however, attempts to take the model a step or two higher on the elegance ladder.
Sporting a layout of its dial that looks almost like a crossover between their earlier 2013 Radiomir 1940 Chrono Monopulsante and the 2010 Radiomir Mare Nostrum models, the 2014 Panerai Radiomir 1940 Chronograph PAM 518 offers an even more balanced combination of modern technology and vintage design.
A. Lange & Sohne has presented whole seven new models at the SIHH 2014 event, yet it is the gorgeous Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar “Terraluna” that will possibly get the most attention from both journalists and connoisseurs alike. While most currently available high-end “moon phase” watches are only good for 122 years before they require adjustment by a qualified serviceman, this model will (theoretically) display correct phases of the Moon for whole 1058 years. And the complication looks great, too.
If you plan to spend the holidays at a sea resort, there is good news for you from the American brand Deep Blue Watches. As prolific as they are (well, in a good meaning of the adjective), the guys have recently introduced an affordable Deep Blue Sea Ram 500 diver that combines an impressive water resistance rating with a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel: a rare mix in its price range.
Created by bladesmith Johan Gustafsson and watchmaker Patrik Sjögren, the Swedish brand is known for timekeepers that, while not terribly advanced when it comes to mechanisms that tick inside their bodies offer a rare combination of materials and excellent craftsmanship. Since all their watches are hand-finished, they are usually limited to just a handful of pieces. This new Gustafsson & Sjögren GoS Midnight Sun, for example, will be issued in a run of just five items!
Available at MSRP of $499 -and currently offered on their official website at just $400- this new Deep Blue Master Diver 1000 automatic diving tool doesn’t look particularly flashy. On the contrary, the new Master Diver is deliberately dull, almost as dull as a wrench or a hammer can be. With every brushed surface, with every massive part, it declares: “Look at me! I am a professional instrument! I am a beater that you can take every place you go to!” Well, it looks like it tells the truth.
While not terribly original, the automatic Cimier Time Square Chronograph (refs. 5106-SS011 in steel and 5106-BP021 in black PVD) delivers a nice combination of sportiness and elegance that makes it versatile if you don’t plan to wear it to a pool party or on a hiking trip.
